An enchanting combination of lightly crisp pastry and a very, very pleasant creamy egg custard filling.
These tarts are everywhere in Portugal but, there is one place, just one, which everyone knows serves the best in the land. In the waterside Lisbon suburb of Belém, a spectacular blue-tiled pastry-and-coffee house serves thousands of custard tarts everyday. And the tarts here, at the Antiga Confeitaria de Belém, are called Pastéis de Belém.
They are a prominent part of Portugal's national identity.
